Coming of age in the rural South of the 1950s and 60s, I observed vast gulfs between man and woman, black and white and humans in nature. I never understood why we could not go inside each other’s world — go beyond the trivial, the mundane and the self. Feeling trapped, I gradually discovered that I could use art to explore other worlds and to make the connections I sought.

My life has evolved from traditional Southern girl to public school teacher to photographer and working artist in sculpture, installation, video, watercolor and bookmaking. During this transformation, I have tried to stay connected to my roots while attempting to go beyond the boundaries in order to link myself with others. After all, my name is Bridger.
